The Web Standards movement has been around for almost 10 years now. Many things have changed and some things have changed very little.
HTML and CSS have mostly remained the same but the implementation of these technologies has improved dramatically. So much so that the implementations themselves have been the driving force behind the emergence of HTML5 and CSS3. This drive towards best practices through Web Standards has even kickstarted the astounding JavaScript renaissance.
We’re now entering an era were sophisticated web technologies are no longer proprietary only. The current web expansion into (social) media, applications and (mobile) devices has helped make HTML/CSS/JavaScript the only user facing web technology that is completely open, ubiquitous and platform independent. The great thing is that we can start using the latest front-end technology today. Savor the coming decade because we truly are, for better or worse, entering the golden age of the open web.
